I demonstrate perseverance and persistence

Perseverance is an important aspect of effective cross-cultural ministry. The Scriptures invite God’s people to persevere during trials (James 1:12). Paul the Apostle persevered through many trials and persecution but continued to serve. As he reflected on these experiences, his attitude was to boast in his weakness and to praise God (2 Cor. 11:23-33). When workers serve in a different country, perseverance is needed in language and cultural study. When they seek to share the gospel with those who do not understand it clearly, persistence is needed. When they train others and nurture the church, patience and perseverance are required. As we serve, it is helpful to be reminded of God’s persistent pursuit of humankind. Even when humans rejected his message, he often continued to patiently work in their lives and provide other opportunities to listen, learn, and respond (Jer. 35:12-15, Jon. 1:1-3, 3:1-2; 2 Pet. 3:8-9). Paul’s ministry also demonstrated perseverance. He remained in Ephesus two years and daily spoke about Jesus (Acts 19:9-10). He also deliberately sought to re-visit congregations to encourage and instruct them. (Acts 14:21-23, 15:36).

Those serving in Muslim contexts will require perseverance and persistence. As there may be resistance to the message about Jesus and the “soil” may be hard, time is needed to minister effectively. Often this may involve repeating the same message or stating it somewhat differently as one continues to demonstrate love to those around them.
